Important Bird Area

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) is recognized as one of the five Important Bird Areas (IBA) in Palawan and is part of the seven Endemic Bird Areas (EBA) in the Philippines, as identified by BirdLife International. The park is home to all 15 of Palawan’s endemic bird species, making it a critical site for the conservation of the island’s unique avifauna.
Among its bird population are five internationally threatened species, highlighting the park’s global ecological significance. Notable species include the Philippine cockatoo (Cacatua haematuropygia), the Chinese egret (Egretta eulophotes), Nordmann’s greenshank (Tringa guttifer), and the Palawan peacock-pheasant (Polyplectron napoleonis). These species rely on the park’s undisturbed forests and wetlands for nesting, feeding, and breeding, emphasizing the PPSRNP’s vital role in the protection and preservation of rare and endangered birds.
